Chapter Sixteen

Clay

I didn’t call Arm Candy again after my weekend with Marie. I’d understood all too late that Marie had seen her time with me as more than just a job. When I’d given her the money, I’d thought I was doing the right thing in paying her for the time she’d spent with me seeing as she was officially ‘on the clock’. That had been a huge mistake.

The fact I’d reconnected with her through an escort agency had blurred the lines between romance and service and I’d been waiting for more of a signal from her about what things meant before I made my move. I didn’t want to be a creepy client crossing lines and was hoping she’d be the first to tell me that she wanted to see me off the books.

I hadn’t wanted to make any assumptions about the time she was spending with me even if I’d felt like there was a spark, so of course I was going to pay her. I’d booked her through the agency and there was an agreed price. I’d signed a service agreement.

If I’d have known she’d see the payment as a sign I was disinterested or only saw her as an escort, I would have done things differently. I certainly wouldn’t have paid such a ludicrous sum, thinking I was being some knight in shining armor making her life easier. All I’d done was make her feel cheap.

It had been two weeks since she left my apartment in tears and I’d not been able to stop thinking about her and being angry at myself for screwing it up so badly. The time I’d spent with Marie had made me feel alive in a way I hadn’t for years and now everything felt shallow.

I’d felt empty before. It was kind of my default, but this time that emptiness was harder to fill. I didn’t want to go out drinking or sleeping around because now I knew that there was only one way to fill the void. Marie.

It left me feeling frustrated and off-focus. I’d been on cloud nine with Marie in my life and losing her had brought me crashing back down to earth in a bad way. I was restless and agitated. Everything pissed me off. My mind kept drifting.

Mal crossed paths with me in the locker room as I was getting changed for surgery and he looked concerned.

“Are you OK, Clay?” he asked. “You seem off your game.”

“I’m fine,” I said tightly. “Just overworked.”

“Maybe you should take a pass on today’s surgery,” he suggested. “Thompson’s on today. He can take it.”

I looked at him like he was insane.

“Take a pass?” I scoffed. “I’m sure that would go down well with the board.” I slammed my locker door shut. “They’ll assume I’m drunk. I’m not canceling anything.”

Mal sighed. “I told you not to get attached to her, man.”

“Well, thanks for the advice.”

I clenched my jaw and stopped myself from saying anything else. It would be easy to go off on Malcolm for babysitting me, but he wasn’t doing anything wrong.
